North Africa’s 5G Squeeze: Early Speeds Yield to Congestion

Cairo: TECHz – News Desk

North Africa’s commercial 5G ecosystem is entering a pivotal transition phase. Following high-profile commercial rollouts and record-setting initial speed benchmarks across key markets, major operators are now confronting measurable performance drops as subscriber adoption surges and network congestion sets in.

Data from global network intelligence benchmarks highlights a recurring pattern across the region: impressive peak speeds recorded during soft-launch and early-adopter phases are increasingly giving way to degraded throughput, latency spikes, and inconsistent user experience during peak hours.

The inaugural phase of 5G across North African hubs demonstrated the massive raw potential of Next-Gen wireless tech. Early deployments in urban centers delivered median download speeds exceeding 300 Mbps to 500 Mbps, representing a ten-fold leap over legacy LTE-Advanced networks. Early commercial deployments in Morocco prioritized high-density business districts like Casablanca and tourist corridors, setting aggressive benchmarks.

Concurrently, Egypt utilized commercial trial spectrum allocations for smart-city infrastructure projects, showcasing low-latency capabilities tailored for enterprise applications. Preliminary spectrum assignments and pilot networks in Algeria and Tunisia also demonstrated high peak data rates during controlled rollouts. However, as commercial availability expanded beyond pilot zones to mass-market consumer tiers, network density has struggled to keep pace with demand.

Industry reporting and technical disclosures from regional telecommunications authorities point to structural bottlenecks driving the current post-launch performance decline. While initial launches heavily utilized non-standalone architecture paired with limited spectrum blocks in the 3.5 GHz C-band range, many regional operators lack access to contiguous, wideband spectrum blocks needed to sustain high multi-gigabit throughput under heavy concurrent load.

A critical dependency of 5G performance is high-capacity optical fiber backhaul connecting cell sites to core networks. In many suburban and secondary municipal areas across North Africa, operators continue to rely on legacy microwave links, creating severe throughput chokepoints when local cell towers handle dense traffic volumes. Subsidized 5G smartphone availability and aggressive operator bundled plans have also accelerated market adoption faster than physical tower deployment schedules. Without sufficient micro-cell density in congested urban quarters, sector-level congestion rapidly degrades average download speeds down toward 4G LTE operational levels during peak utilization windows.

To arrest performance degradation and fulfill early market promises, regional carriers are shifting focus from immediate coverage expansion toward core infrastructure hardening. Network engineering strategies outlined across carrier disclosures emphasize accelerating the refarming of legacy 3G and mid-band 2.1 GHz spectrum to augment C-band capacity. Operators are also prioritizing core network transport upgrades to replace capacity-constrained microwave links with high-throughput optical fiber, while actively transitioning to native 5G standalone cores to unlock true network slicing and sub-10ms latency.

North Africa remains one of the world’s most dynamic telecom growth markets. While early performance pullbacks reflect standard scaling friction seen globally during mass 5G adoption, the long-term viability of the region’s digital economy hinges on how swiftly operators and regulators address spectrum allocation and backhaul density. The focus now turns from marketing speed tests to executing the long-term infrastructure investment required for sustained quality of service.
