The Namibian government has officially engaged multinational professional services firm Deloitte & Touche to guide the development of its artificial intelligence (AI) strategy framework and broader digital infrastructure.
The collaboration follows high-level talks held this week in Windhoek between Emma Theofelus, Namibia’s Minister of Information and Communication Technology, and a Deloitte & Touche Namibia delegation led by Country Leader Melanie Harrison.
According to the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, the discussions centered on several critical pillars necessary for a robust digital future. Key priority areas include ensuring ethical deployment through trustworthy AI and localized AI factories, expanding broadband access and developing data centers, enhancing national cybersecurity while integrating clean energy solutions, and championing women in technology.
Consultations for the AI strategy framework are already underway, spearheaded by the National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST). The government is taking a deliberate approach, opting to outline its strategic vision before drafting hard laws.
“Government has prioritised the development of a national strategy before introducing legislation, with the aim of establishing clear guiding principles that will support responsible AI development and governance as technology continues to evolve,” stated Minister Theofelus.
During the engagement, Deloitte leveraged its global AI policy advisory frameworks to provide actionable insights, particularly concerning telecommunications and data center investments. Harrison emphasized that regulatory frameworks and legislation must rapidly adapt to keep pace with technological advancements, reaffirming Deloitte’s commitment to supporting Namibia’s policy landscape.
