MTN Ghana and the University of Ghana have formalized a strategic Memorandum of Understanding designed to accelerate digital innovation and cultivate the next generation of tech talent. The partnership bridges industry and academia to strengthen Ghana’s overall digital capabilities, anchored by the launch of the MTN Ghana Tɛkyerɛma Pa Hackathon, an annual event hosted alongside the University’s Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Lab in Accra.
Through this initiative, developers are tasked with building high-impact digital tools specifically designed for Ghanaian languages to promote digital inclusion for non-English speakers. To prepare participants, the program features rigorous online bootcamps, including specialized training in fields like Computer Vision led by academic experts such as Prof. Justice Kwame Appati.
This collaboration addresses a critical gap in the tech landscape by prioritizing localized digital solutions that make technology intuitively accessible to local populations. By focusing on human-centric design, the partnership ensures resulting software is technically functional and optimized for user experience. Furthermore, participants gain hands-on exposure to applied artificial intelligence and machine learning, translating theoretical academic knowledge into practical, market-ready skills and transforming local ideas into scalable digital products.
