Lilongwe: TECHz – News Desk

The Malawi government has launched a new initiative to develop artificial intelligence models in Chichewa, marking an important step in the country’s efforts to advance digital inclusion, innovation, and economic growth through local language technologies.

The initiative is being implemented through the Malawi Low Resource Language Data Trust Initiative, which focuses on developing core AI frameworks and assembling licensed Chichewa language content to expand the availability of training data for artificial intelligence systems. The project is supported by the World Bank and the Gates Foundation and positions Malawi among the countries working to improve AI capabilities for underrepresented languages.

Speaking at the AI for Malawi National Language Data Trust workshop in Lilongwe, Minister of Defence Dr. Feston Kaupa, representing Minister of Information and Communications Technology Dr. Shadric Namalomba, emphasized the importance of investing in artificial intelligence to support national development.

He noted that countries that strategically adopt AI technologies will be better positioned to drive innovation, improve productivity, and strengthen their competitiveness in the global economy. The government believes that developing AI solutions in local languages can help expand access to digital technologies while ensuring that more citizens benefit from emerging technological advancements.

The Chichewa AI initiative aims to create language resources that can support future applications such as digital assistants, translation tools, educational platforms, and other AI-powered services tailored to local needs. By increasing the availability of quality language datasets, the project seeks to address the challenges faced by low-resource languages in global AI development.

The initiative also reflects Malawi’s broader digital transformation ambitions, where investments in local language technologies are expected to improve inclusion, encourage innovation, and create new economic opportunities. As AI adoption accelerates globally, Malawi’s efforts to develop indigenous language models could help ensure that local communities participate more fully in the digital economy while preserving and promoting the country’s linguistic heritage.
