Malawi Activates 36th Rural Cell Tower

Lilongwe: TECHz Magazine – News Desk

The Government of Malawi has officially activated a new telecommunications tower in Kalira Village, Lilongwe Nyanja, marking its 36th operational site in an ongoing effort to bridge the digital divide. The launch falls under the Last Mile Rural Connectivity Project, a government initiative designed to bring critical mobile and internet access to underserved communities.

Minister of Information and Digitalization, Shadric Namalomba, inaugurated the tower, framing the infrastructure as a driver for inclusion where distance and geography no longer restrict access to the modern economy. This expanded connectivity allows rural students to access the same digital learning resources as those in urban centers, while enabling farmers to check real-time weather forecasts and market pricing. Furthermore, local entrepreneurs are now equipped to use online platforms to grow their businesses, and residents can reliably make emergency calls, ensuring local health facilities and security services benefit from improved coordination.

The Kalira installation aligns with Malawi’s national development agenda under President Peter Mutharika and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. As part of the broader rollout plan, there are 35 previously operational sites, with five more recently completed, including the Kalira location. Currently, five additional towers are under construction, contributing to a short-term goal of completing 16 towers within this financial year. Ultimately, the project aims to establish a total of 136 rural towers nationwide to ensure comprehensive national coverage.

Rolling out rural telecom infrastructure involves significant logistical hurdles, including land disputes, unreliable power supplies, and ongoing maintenance demands. To overcome these bottlenecks, the Ministry of Information, operating through the Department of eGovernment, is actively collaborating with mobile network operators, telecom regulators, and traditional leaders – like Senior Chief Kalumbu – to secure land access and protect future sites.
