Kenya is accelerating its digital transformation agenda by placing a stronger emphasis on integrating digital skills, technology, and character development into its education system. In a significant move to reshape the educational landscape, the country officially launched the SIBOH Schools & Sports Academy virtual home.
The official launch event was attended by First Lady Rachel Ruto, Principal Secretary for the State Department of ICT and Digital Economy Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui, and Principal Secretary for Basic Education John Ololtuaa.
During the event, Eng. Tanui noted that the evolving landscape of education requires schools to prepare learners for a rapidly changing, technology-driven world. The SIBOH virtual platform is designed to extend learning beyond traditional physical classrooms, providing students with alternative pathways to access knowledge, develop talents, and engage with opportunities enabled by digital innovation.
A central pillar of the newly launched virtual home is its focus on core values, encapsulated in the acronym SIBOH: Servanthood, Integrity, Bravery, Optimism, and Honour. These principles are positioned at the heart of the academy’s approach, blending academic and technological capabilities with strong character and leadership.
Eng. Tanui stressed that while technology is vital, it should act as an enabler rather than the ultimate goal of education. He urged that learners must be equipped to use digital tools to think critically, innovate, and solve real-world problems.
The launch aligns with the Kenyan government’s broader ongoing efforts to bridge the digital divide in schools by expanding internet connectivity across learning institutions, equipping more than 10,000 public Junior Secondary Schools with digital learning devices and smartboards, and strengthening foundational digital skills among young learners.
To ensure students remain globally competitive, the government is also seeking to expose learners to emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, and Cloud Computing.
Ultimately, the SIBOH virtual home demonstrates how digital platforms can merge technology with education. As Tanui concluded, Kenya’s education system must prepare young people not only to adapt to technological changes but to confidently shape the country’s digital future through a balance of digital proficiency, leadership, and resilience.
