From Padangpanjang to the World: “Swarnadwipa 2026” Festival Weaves New Visual Conversations on Identity

WEST SUMATRA: TECHz – News Desk

From the heart of a small highland city in West Sumatra, Indonesia, a new visual conversation is taking shape, aiming to bridge the gap between local stories and the international photographic community. The Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Padangpanjang concluded the events of the “Swarnadwipa International Photo Festival 2026” (SIPF 2026), which was held from August 26 to 28, 2026, wrapping up with a special photo-hunting program on August 29.

“Threads of Identity”: More Than Just Photos
This artistic event enters its second edition carrying the theme “Threads of Identity,” utilizing photography as a profound medium to explore and understand identity, culture, memory, and social change, as well as human relationships with their environment. The festival showcases around 140 photographic works representing a rich mix of genres and artistic approaches, where each work embodies the experiences and ideas of its maker, contributing to a broader visual dialogue about how individual and collective identities are formed.

In this context, Benny Kurniadi, the festival’s founder and Head of the Photography Study Program at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, says: “Swarnadwipa was not designed to be merely an exhibition space, but was established as a space for encounters; not only between photographers and their works, but also between ideas, cultures, and generations with their different perspectives. We want photography to become a language through which people can understand and learn from one another.”

Kurniadi emphasizes that identity does not exist in isolation; it is shaped by family, tradition, place, history, social environment, and personal memory. Photography possesses the exceptional ability to reveal these threads and weave them into a comprehensive visual narrative.

An International Platform for Cultural Exchange
After the success of its inaugural launch in 2024 under the theme “Visual Identity” and the participation of photographers from numerous countries, “Swarnadwipa” transitions in 2026 into a biennial festival (held every two years). This transition aims to ensure the continuity of its artistic direction and build a sustainable photographic archive.

The international dimension is further strengthened in this edition through the participation of international curators and practitioners, most notably Sanjoy Bhattacharya from the Bengal Institute of Photography in India, and the Omani photographer and academic Ali Al Ghafri. The significance of this presence is not limited to international names but extends to creating real opportunities for knowledge exchange. Through this approach, Padangpanjang does not stand on the margins of the global photographic scene, but becomes an active center for this discourse.

Honoring a Legacy of Achievements
One of the highlights of the festival this year is the presentation of the “Swarnadwipa Lifetime Achievement Award in Photography 2026” to the veteran Indonesian photographer “Don Hasman.” This award comes in recognition of his long career as an explorer and visual documentarian who has engaged deeply with Indonesia’s nature, cultures, and communities. This honor, preceded by the honoring of “Risman Marah” in 2024, is a step towards strengthening the continuity of knowledge between generations and presenting photography icons as inspiring references for the youth.

An Integrated Ecosystem Beyond Exhibition Halls
The festival is not limited to exhibitions alone, but includes wide-ranging educational and participatory programs featuring seminars, workshops, public discussions, and an on-the-spot photo competition that invites participants to interact directly with the spaces, people, and culture in Padangpanjang. These activities aim to enhance visual culture and build a sustainable photography ecosystem originating from West Sumatra.

The festival concluded its message with a simple yet powerful statement: Every person has a story, every culture carries memories, and every photograph has the ability to connect the two, so that “Threads of Identity” remains the link between the past and the future, between the local and the global, and ultimately… between Padangpanjang and the world.
