Kampala: TECHz – News Desk

In a major step toward bridging the digital divide, dfcu Bank, acting through the dfcu Foundation, has donated 100 desktop computers to Uganda’s Ministry of ICT and National Guidance. The computers, officially handed over at the National ICT Innovation Hub in Nakawa, Kampala, will be distributed to selected schools in underserved communities across the country.

Designed to accelerate Uganda’s digital skilling agenda, the devices come preloaded with the SOMA digital learning platform. This software will equip young innovators, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and digital professionals with the tools needed for business development training and technology access. The donation is part of a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) established between the dfcu Foundation and the Ministry in November 2024. The broader partnership focuses on driving digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and financial inclusion to align with Uganda’s Digital Transformation Roadmap.

During the handover ceremony, Dr. Amina Zawedde, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, emphasized the vital importance of private-sector collaboration.
“We can’t skill people if we don’t have the devices. We can’t learn if we don’t have the computers.” – Dr. Amina Zawedde. Dr. Zawedde noted that digital infrastructure and skills are essential for the country’s economic transformation agenda. The partnership directly supports the National Development Plan IV by strengthening human capital and ensuring that citizens have the digital literacy required to access online government services, market information, and financial tools.

Representing dfcu Bank, Helena Mayanja, Head of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, highlighted that access to technology has become a fundamental requirement for participating in a modern economy. The initiative ensures that the government’s digital ambitions are met with practical, on-the-ground interventions that uplift youth and women-led enterprises. To date, the collaboration has already seen over 200 innovators participate in financial literacy and business management programs through the National ICT Hub, reinforcing the long-term goal of building resilient, digitally capable communities.
