Cloudflare has officially unveiled Cloudflare Wallets and cloudflare.pay, a new suite of tools designed to grant artificial intelligence agents a verified digital identity and the autonomy to make secure online purchases on behalf of their human creators.
This launch establishes the foundational infrastructure required for a trusted agentic economy, enabling software programs to autonomously browse, query APIs, and transact with built-in accountability. Traditional Internet infrastructure was explicitly built for human users, leaving businesses unable to distinguish between a legitimate AI assistant and a malicious bot.
Older bot detection tools were built for search crawlers rather than transactional agents, which frequently forces companies to either entirely block automated traffic or leave their systems vulnerable to abuse. Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, emphasized that the internet is shifting from human-driven browsing to agent-driven commerce. Prince stated that when an agent arrives, verification is essential, and Cloudflare provides the identity and payment infrastructure necessary for the agentic web to function by linking agents directly to the humans or organizations that own them.
The newly announced ecosystem addresses both identity verification and payment facilitation through a connected approach. Every Cloudflare account receives a unique web address serving as a persistent ID. Users can extend this identity to specific AI agents, allowing vendors and sites to verify precisely who authorized a request. To manage funds, a central account wallet system receives and holds stablecoins. From this central balance, users can issue virtual sub-wallets to individual AI agents to spend on online resources. These virtual wallets feature strict, user-defined guardrails, including spending caps, maximum transaction limits, and approved merchant lists that the autonomous agent cannot override.
At the technical core of this system is the x402 protocol, a modern evolution of the traditional HTTP 402 “Payment Required” response code. When an AI agent encounters a gated API or a paywall, the server responds with a 402 code and a payment challenge outlining what to pay and how much. The agent can autonomously fulfill the payment using its virtual wallet and on-chain stablecoins, then retry the request with a cryptographic payment credential to access the resource.
This infrastructure pairs directly with Cloudflare’s Monetization Gateway, which allows creators and businesses to easily charge for any web page, dataset, API, or Model Context Protocol (MCP) tool behind Cloudflare’s network without needing to build their own complex backend payment stack. Reservations for Cloudflare Wallet handles are currently open at cloudflare.pay, with full wallet access – including the ability to onramp and offramp funds, as well as issue virtual wallets to agents – rolling out in the coming months.
