MTN Eswatini and Lubane Savings and Credit Co-operative Society (Lubane SACCO) have signed a five-year strategic agreement to establish the Lubane SACCO Device Loan Facility, an initiative structured to lower the financial barriers to smartphone ownership for cooperative members across the country. Formalized at the Lubane Building in Ezulwini, the partnership pairs institutional device financing with discounted telecommunications packages to accelerate nationwide digital and financial inclusion.
Under the framework, eligible members can acquire modern 4G and 5G smartphones through structured credit administered directly by the cooperative, amortizing costs over flexible terms linked to their SACCO accounts rather than paying full retail prices upfront. Each subsidized device comes bundled with tailored MTN Eswatini voice and data allocations, while integrating directly with Lubane SACCO’s digital self-service channels and the broader MTN Mobile Money ecosystem.
The partnership was signed by MTN Eswatini Chief Executive Officer Jerry Soko and Lubane SACCO Chief Executive Officer Gugu Vilakati, alongside enterprise and executive leadership from both institutions. Vilakati underscored the initiative as a catalyst for long-term digital empowerment and socioeconomic mobility, while Soko emphasized that dedicated, cost-effective digital bundles ensure members can actively participate in the country’s expanding digital economy.
By resolving the upfront capital cost of connected hardware – the primary bottleneck to digital adoption in Eswatini – the facility expands access to mobile banking, remote business tools, and online services. While initial disbursement is focused on active Lubane SACCO members, the five-year roadmap includes extending the financing model to other cooperatives nationwide, creating a shared platform that leverages collective bargaining power to deliver affordable connectivity across Eswatini’s workforce.
