Mastercard Signals: Securing Agentic Commerce

As artificial intelligence shifts from simple search tools to independent decision-makers, the digital economy is entering the era of agentic commerce.

A comprehensive report by Mastercard titled “Encoding Trust: The Race for Intent, Consent and Control in the Agentic World” investigates how machine-mediated markets will scale safely through robust trust, identity, and security architectures.

The financial opportunity for automated systems is immense. Forecasts indicate that agent-assisted consumer spending will reach $3 trillion to $5 trillion by 2030, with business-to-business transaction volumes projected to scale at even higher multiples. However, industry leaders emphasize that commercial expansion will not be driven by raw autonomy alone. Long-term adoption depends on structured, user-centric experiences that simplify complex decision-making while keeping people firmly informed and in control.

Traditional digital commerce relies heavily on manual, command-based consumer interactions. In contrast, agentic commerce introduces dynamic, software-driven systems that can reason, plan, and execute multi-step objectives end-to-end. For example, a consumer might issue a single prompt to replace running shoes for under $120 and have them delivered by Friday. An authorized AI agent can then autonomously verify size and preferences, search global inventories, cross-compare prices and return policies, apply appropriate loyalty benefits, authorize payments, and issue a receipt. To achieve this level of cross-platform execution safely, the market requires a fundamental structural shift where trust, policy controls, and secure payment rails are natively built in rather than bolted on.

Without standardized methods to verify the identity of automated agents and accurately capture user intent, merchants face heightened risks of fraud, brand degradation, and friction for genuine buyers. To counter these vulnerabilities, frameworks like the Mastercard Agent Pay Acceptance Framework have been introduced to establish secure operating standards. This is achieved through trusted agent recognition, which implements protocols such as Web Bot Auth at the Content Delivery Network layer to verify agent authenticity natively and block malicious scripts. Additionally, agentic tokens utilize dynamic, cryptographically secure credentials to ensure every transaction is completely traceable and authenticated, protecting sensitive financial information.

Providing merchants with transparent purchase intent data – including cart contents, validation windows, and strict spending limits – also creates a dependable audit trail to minimize disputes and chargebacks. As the ecosystem matures, open interoperability protocols such as the Model Context Protocol (MCP), Agent2Agent (A2A), and Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) will enable AI tools to safely connect across diverse applications and platforms.

Establishing a secure ecosystem requires deep cross-industry cooperation. Mastercard is actively working alongside key technology stakeholders, including the FIDO Alliance and major platform leaders, to advance common standards for user-consented, verified interactions. For financial institutions, payment networks, and merchants alike, the competitive frontier is shifting. Success will no longer be determined solely by isolated app features, but by an organization’s capacity to earn trust for delegated tasks through policy-aware, secure, and compliant financial architectures.
