Venezuela is taking part in the 15th Remote Sensing and Digital Image Processing Course for Geoscientists at the Geological Survey of India Training Institute in Hyderabad. The programme is part of India’s Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) initiative and is designed to boost collaboration among countries in the Global South using satellite technology.
Participants include specialists from Zimbabwe, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Nigeria, Egypt, and Ethiopia. The training covers modern methods of remote sensing and digital image analysis to study geological processes and support resource exploration. Experts highlighted that true technological independence comes not just from owning satellites but from being able to interpret and analyse the data effectively.
The skills gained are expected to help identify key resources such as oil, fertile soils, and deposits of coltan and gold, while making exploration more precise and efficient.
After completing the course, Venezuela plans to expand its use of satellite data in mining, energy, defence, and disaster risk monitoring. The training will also improve the use of Venezuela’s own satellites, Miranda (VRSS-1) and Sucre (VRSS-2), for land-use planning, territorial monitoring, and managing natural resources.
