Mukuru Debuts Visa Card in Botswana
Next-generation African financial services provider Mukuru has expanded its portfolio in Botswana by launching the Mukuru Card in partnership with Access Bank and Visa.
Operating under Electronic Payment Services License No. 001, the card links directly to the digital Mukuru Wallet, providing consumers with broader access to physical and online retail payments as well as ATM cash withdrawals without requiring a traditional bank account.
Available to Mukuru wallet customers aged 18 and older following standard KYC verification, the card acts as a direct payment instrument using active wallet balances. Cardholders can complete point-of-sale transactions at Visa merchant locations, perform local e-commerce payments, and access cash at ATMs nationwide. The service features a BWP 50.00 activation fee, a BWP 1.20 local POS transaction fee, and a BWP 7.00 local ATM withdrawal rate.
Under the strategic alliance, Access Bank provides underlying financial and settlement services, while Visa enables local transaction processing. Safety is maintained through PIN-protected authorization for all merchant and ATM activities, paired with real-time balance tracking via WhatsApp, USSD, and the Mukuru mobile application. By linking cross-border remittance capabilities with daily domestic spending tools, the joint initiative offers a seamless bridge between cash payments and digital financial services in Botswana.
