Kenya has officially commenced the second phase of its Digital Literacy Programme device rollout to strengthen digital learning and support the Competency-Based Education framework. Implemented by the ICT Authority under the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project with World Bank support, the initiative transitions the focus from basic access to the meaningful application of classroom technology.
The nationwide rollout targets 10,382 public Junior Secondary Schools across all 47 counties, equipping each with one 65-inch interactive smart board and a teacher laptop. The integration of these devices is designed to make lessons more visual, interactive, and engaging, expanding access to rich digital educational content and establishing schools as centers of digital excellence.
The Nairobi County rollout was officially launched at Lenana Primary School by Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, Eng. John Tanui, alongside Dagoretti South MP, Hon. John Kiarie, and ICT Authority CEO, Jessy Maruti. The rollout in Nairobi has seen substantial progress, with devices successfully delivered to all 98 targeted schools and full installation, inspection, and acceptance completed in 91 of those schools.
The Kenyan Government has emphasized that these physical devices are just one component of a holistic digital learning ecosystem. To ensure sustained impact, the Teachers Service Commission previously organized a nationwide virtual sensitization program to guide Junior School heads on the management and safeguarding of the equipment.
To support connectivity, the government is also expanding its fiber optic footprint, having deployed over 30,000 kilometers toward a target of 100,000 kilometers to connect over 8,000 public institutions. Backed by continuous technical monitoring, this rollout aims to equip learners with essential digital tools as Kenya positions itself as a leader in the global digital economy.
