On 24 December 2025, Alibaba Group announced a major strategic realignment, positioning its proprietary Qwen AI model at the core of its consumer and enterprise ecosystem. The move marks a decisive shift toward AI infrastructure and daily service integration, reinforcing Alibaba’s ambition to lead in the global AI economy.
Alibaba embedded Qwen into its Amap navigation service, enabling AI-powered “Life Services” such as real-time directions, local business search, and booking assistance. The company emphasized that Qwen will serve as the foundation for consumer applications spanning e-commerce, logistics, cloud services, and entertainment. Building on the Qwen Consumer Business Group launched earlier in December, Alibaba confirmed plans to develop Qwen into a “super app” accessible via smart glasses, PCs, and vehicles.
Earlier in December, Qwen surpassed Meta’s Llama to become the world’s most-utilized open-source AI model, with 600 million downloads. Despite this breakthrough, Alibaba’s shares fell 3.57% in Hong Kong on 15 December, reflecting broader concerns about China’s retail and industrial slowdown. The 24 December announcement signals Alibaba’s pivot toward embedding AI into everyday services, positioning itself as a global AI powerhouse heading into 2026, though execution and regulation remain critical challenges.
