To address the surging bandwidth demands driven by cloud services, AI workloads, and data center interconnectivity, Telxius has partnered with Nokia to roll out 800G coherent pluggable optics across its terrestrial transport networks. The deployment spans key digital corridors in Europe, the United States, and Latin America.
The infrastructure upgrade leverages Nokia’s ICE-X 800G ZR/ZR+ coherent pluggable technology, enabling Telxius to seamlessly add capacity to its existing footprint. By utilizing IP-over-DWDM networking, the deployment expands network bandwidth while reducing the power and space required for network expansion. The integration of these next-generation optics is supported by Nokia’s network automation tools, which provide end-to-end visibility, fault and performance monitoring, and coordinated service provisioning. Ultimately, this consolidation of IP and optical layers optimizes space utilization and significantly reduces energy consumption across the network.
This terrestrial rollout follows an industry-record-setting trial between the two companies over Telxius’ BRUSA subsea cable system, where Nokia’s ICE-X 800G ZR+ technology successfully delivered 400 Gb/s per wavelength across more than 5,600 kilometers. By adopting the same optical platform for its terrestrial routes, Telxius establishes a consistent, high-performance foundation seamlessly connecting terrestrial and subsea infrastructure.

As AI models scale and inference workloads require continuous data transfer, traffic between hyperscale data centers and global network hubs continues to put pressure on network operators. Ron Johnson, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Optical Networks at Nokia, emphasized the strategic timing of the upgrade, noting that operators need transport solutions combining scalability, efficiency, and operational simplicity. With this deployment, Telxius is efficiently expanding capacity across its terrestrial infrastructure to create a high-performance foundation for data center interconnection.
