Mozambique has officially launched the Mozambican Association of Artificial Intelligence (AMIA), marking a critical step in the nation’s efforts to structure its digital future and build a cohesive technological ecosystem.
The inauguration of AMIA’s leadership executive took place in Maputo on Thursday, headed by the association’s new president, Donald Dimas. The launch arrives just three months after the unveiling of Mozambique’s draft National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (ENIA), a broader regulatory roadmap championed by the National Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (INTIC).
The association is designed to act as a unified technical platform that bridges the gap between public policy and practical industry innovation. It connects government agencies, academia, civil society, and private sector tech integrators to ensure safe, ethical AI deployment while harnessing AI to elevate public administration, boost productivity, and improve public service delivery.
AMIA will also accelerate the integration of emerging technologies across critical local sectors like agriculture, healthcare, education, and banking, while working closely with INTIC to finalize the ENIA framework.
Prof. Dr. Eng. Lourino Chemane, Chairman of the Board of Directors at INTIC, noted that AI represents an immediate opportunity to accelerate both social and economic growth across the Southern African nation.
By focusing on data governance to mitigate regulatory uncertainty, fostering digital inclusion to address societal challenges, and providing early-stage insight to attract targeted financing for digital infrastructure, Mozambique aims to lay the groundwork for a robust, sustainable digital economy tailored to local needs.
