The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) is hosting a five-day regional training program to advance broadband mapping and digital infrastructure planning across Southern Africa.
Organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) with European Union backing, the Africa-BB-Maps Intermediate GIS and Data Management for Broadband Mapping Training brings together ICT and regulatory professionals from Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Zambia. Technical instruction is delivered by Esri South Africa College.
The program trains participants in advanced geographic information systems (GIS), enterprise geodatabase management, and data governance using real-world fiber optic and mobile coverage datasets.
Opening the session, MACRA Acting Director of Telecoms Patrick Musiyapo highlighted that accurate broadband mapping provides the essential evidence needed to pinpoint connectivity blind spots, direct public and private investments, and guide national ICT policies toward underserved communities.
