The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has launched an ambitious initiative to equip 120,000 citizens across 19 counties with foundational digital skills over the next three years. The strategic move aims to address critical gaps in digital literacy and ensure that the nation’s expanding internet connectivity translates into tangible economic empowerment for all communities.
While infrastructure expansion has successfully brought internet services to more remote areas, the CA recognizes that access to connectivity alone is insufficient. A lack of practical digital competencies continues to limit the ability of many Kenyans to leverage these services effectively. To combat this, the training program is being actively implemented through the Authority’s Universal Service Fund (USF) under its Digital Skilling Project, explicitly targeting communities in historically unserved and underserved regions so marginalized populations are not left behind.
The CA’s rollout is designed to fulfill several core objectives, including empowering rural areas, ensuring citizens can confidently navigate digital technologies for jobs, and maximizing the physical expansion of broadband infrastructure.
Ultimately, the CA views the combination of internet access and practical training as the key to closing Kenya’s digital divide. By building capacity at the grassroots level, the initiative supports broader national goals of achieving universal digital access and preparing the workforce for a rapidly evolving global digital economy.
