Speaking at the recent Accelerated Digital Transformation Summit in Addis Ababa, Safaricom Ethiopia CEO Wim Vanhelleputte underscored the necessity of a unified, inclusive digital ecosystem to achieve the ambitious goals set out in the Digital Ethiopia 2030 agenda and the National Digital Payments Strategy.
For a digital economy to thrive, real-time and interoperable digital payment systems are a prerequisite. Interoperability ensures that different financial and telecommunications platforms can seamlessly communicate with one another, preventing monopolistic bottlenecks and broadening public participation.
Through its mobile money platform, M-PESA Ethiopia, Safaricom is actively driving this vision by expanding access to financial services and fostering innovation. Embracing open APIs allows developers to plug into multiple platforms and engineer localized solutions tailored to specific community challenges.
Beyond financial interoperability, physical infrastructure and accessibility are critical for national digital transformation. Safaricom continues to aggressively expand its network footprint, reaching over 3,500 sites and achieving 59% 4G population coverage in its recent fiscal year. Because reliable networks require accessible hardware, affordable smart devices remain the fundamental gateway to digital life for millions of citizens.
Additionally, the recently announced Safaricom Ethiopia TechStart initiative aims to upskill the nation’s youth with vital cloud and digital technology capabilities, ensuring the workforce can effectively leverage this expanding infrastructure.
The push for a connected Africa requires deep alignment between private operators, local governments, and national regulatory frameworks. By aligning its operations with Ethiopia’s national strategies, Safaricom Ethiopia is positioning itself as a collaborative partner in the country’s long-term prosperity, emphasizing that empowering individuals through open, interoperable systems is key to unlocking the region’s full innovative potential.
