In a move highlighting the growing intersection of telecommunications and continental economic policy, leaders from the MTN Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) convened this week to discuss the future of Africa’s digital economy. The high-level meeting focused on macroeconomic outlooks and the transformative power of digital and financial inclusion across the continent.
MTN Group President and Chief Executive Officer Ralph Mupita hosted IMF First Deputy Managing Director Dan Katz during Katz’s visit to South Africa, where he is engaging with government authorities and private sector representatives. The discussion centered on the macroeconomic environments of MTN’s primary markets and how the digital economy can serve as a catalyst for sustainable growth.
The MTN delegation included Ralph Mupita, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer Nompilo Morafo, Treasury Executive Thuto Shomang, and Chief of Staff Jerry Varachia. The IMF delegation featured Dan Katz, Advisor to the First Deputy Managing Director Matthew Jones, IMF Mission Chief for South Africa Delia Velculescu, and IMF Senior Resident Representative and Head of the South Africa Office Tidiane Kinda.
The dialogue reinforced MTN’s core purpose of leading digital solutions for Africa, a mission that anchors the company’s Ambition 2030 strategy. This long-term strategic framework is designed to accelerate digital transformation, empowering consumers, homes, and businesses across the continent through robust digital platforms.
“Given MTN’s pan-African presence and position, as well as our role in advancing digital and financial inclusion, the discussion centred on the macroeconomic outlook across our key markets of South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana,” Mupita stated. “In particular, we discussed the power of the digital economy to drive sustainable growth across the continent.”
Mupita further emphasized the critical role of international cooperation, noting that accelerating Africa’s digital transformation requires strong global partnerships. The constructive engagement with the IMF leadership marks a continued effort by the telecom giant to align private sector digital infrastructure expansion with broader macroeconomic stability and growth goals.
