Vodacom, UJ, and AWS Launch AI Lab

Johannesburg: TECHz – News Desk

South Africa’s digital ecosystem has taken a significant leap forward in addressing the chronic shortage of specialized tech skills. Vodacom has officially partnered with the University of Johannesburg (UJ), in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), to launch the Vodacom AI Lab. This initiative aims to cultivate a sustainable pipeline of job-ready artificial intelligence (AI) and data science talent.

Housed within UJ’s College of Business and Economics – specifically anchoring the Centre for Applied Data Science – the new lab departs from traditional sandbox learning. The partnership brings academia, industry, and cloud computing together to give postgraduate students hands-on exposure to live industry problems.

“Our students will not study AI in theory,” explained Prabashni Naidoo, Director at AWS in South Africa. “They will work on live Vodacom use cases running on real AWS infrastructure. This is the kind of hands-on experience that until now took years to accumulate out of university”.

Students and researchers are gaining access to world-class AWS technologies, including Amazon Bedrock, Amazon SageMaker, and Amazon QuickSight. This suite of advanced tools allows them to build, train, and test machine learning models in real-world environments at an unprecedented pace. The research and development stream is already underway, with master’s and PhD students tackling high-impact areas aligned directly with Vodacom’s operational challenges.

Key projects currently in development include building a federated learning architecture for multi-country fraud prevention to investigate how mobile operators can identify and stop cross-border fraud without compromising sensitive customer data. Additionally, researchers are exploring blockchain-based approaches to strengthen decentralized digital identity security, alongside developing autonomous AI systems to analyze and seamlessly respond to cyber threats across complex telecommunications networks.

Johnny dos Santos, Vodacom’s AI lead, emphasized the practical value of these initiatives: “These projects represent more than academic exercises; they address critical challenges facing the industry today”. For Vodacom, the partnership is a strategic move to close a long-standing skills gap.

“For too long, universities have developed exceptional talent while industry searched for specialised AI and digital skills needed to keep growing,” said Shameel Joosub, Vodacom Group CEO. “We are creating a direct pathway from university research to industry impact, where students work on real AI use cases and emerge ready to practise”.

The academic benefits are equally profound. Professor Tankiso Moloi, Executive Dean of UJ’s College of Business and Economics, noted that the true value lies in deeper research capacity and sustained talent development. “This collaboration creates a foundation for sustained capability-building and demonstrates how strategic partnerships can strengthen AI expertise at both national and continental level”.

With Vodacom operating across eight African markets, the UJ model is designed to be highly scalable. As AWS’s Naidoo noted, the talent pipeline created in Johannesburg has the potential to become a blueprint for the entire continent, driving meaningful innovation and ensuring that Africa’s future AI workforce reflects the diversity of the communities it serves.
