The SMART Zambia Institute, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Zambia, conducted an online safety awareness program for pupils at Kamulanga Secondary School as part of the Safer Internet Day campaign. The initiative focused on equipping students with practical skills to navigate digital risks safely.
The program was led by Brian Nawa and Edward Mushota, covering areas such as protecting personal profiles, identifying scams, promoting cyber wellness, and reporting mobile fraud through the USSD code *707#.
Key topics included safeguarding passwords and personal information, recognizing fraudulent messages and phishing attempts, responsible use of digital devices to prevent cyberbullying, and immediate reporting of scams. Over 1,100 mobile scams were reported recently, highlighting the importance of such awareness programs.
The campaign also promotes two globally recognized Cisco Networking Academy courses: Introduction to Cybersecurity and Introduction to Data Science. Both courses are self-paced, free of charge, and provide students with essential skills in cybersecurity, digital safety, and data analytics.
The February campaign runs from 1st to 28th February 2026. SMART Zambia Institute and its partners plan to continue related awareness and engagement activities throughout the year to strengthen child online safety across the country.
