Zamtel has reaffirmed its commitment to STEM education and youth technology development in Zambia by supporting the 2026 JETS (Junior Engineers, Technicians and Scientists) and TETS (Tertiary Engineers, Technicians & Scientists) Fair.
Hosted at the National Science Centre in Lusaka by the Ministry of Education and the Directorate of the National Science Centre, the 2026 edition has been recognized as the most attended iteration of the fair to date. Operating under the theme “Promoting Innovation and Competence Development in STEM Education,” the event gathered approximately 400 young innovators from all 10 Zambian provinces to showcase technology solutions, scientific projects, and practical ideas aimed at addressing real-world national development challenges.
Originally established in 1968 to bring practical science to schools, the JETS program expanded its educational continuum in 2025 with the introduction of TETS, extending the innovation platform into tertiary institutions such as universities, colleges, and TEVET centers. Representing Zamtel’s Chief Executive Officer, Chief Technical Officer Mwiya Wamunyima emphasized the telecommunications provider’s dedication to empowering youth through robust connectivity and technology. Wamunyima challenged the young Zambians in attendance to transition from simply consuming digital solutions to actively developing the technologies that will solve local challenges.
Zamtel indicated that its involvement reflects the company’s broader strategy to support platforms that provide emerging innovators with the skills, partnerships, and resources required to shape Zambia’s technological future. The fair was officially launched by Guest of Honour Prof. Michelo Syakalima, who encouraged participants to continuously refine their prototypes and use their innovations to strengthen Zambia’s overall competitiveness in the modern economy.
