Kenya is rapidly advancing its digital infrastructure beyond major urban centers by bringing high-speed public Wi-Fi to the Nyaru Centre, a rural settlement in Elgeyo-Marakwet County’s Keiyo South constituency.
As part of the national Digital Superhighway blueprint, the government leveraged existing Kenya Power infrastructure to deploy fiber optic cables, significantly reducing both costs and installation time for this last-mile connection.
The newly installed free hotspot serves as a vital digital gateway for local micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, traders, and youth, granting them direct access to e-government services, remote entrepreneurship resources, and e-commerce platforms.
PS John Kipchumba Tanui of the State Department of ICT emphasized that translating the national digital strategy down to the community level is crucial for equitable economic participation. This Keiyo South deployment joins a broader nationwide initiative that is already connecting hundreds of thousands of Kenyans to daily internet access.
