NEC Corporation has partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Food Production of Côte d’Ivoire to launch a digital agriculture efficiency and advancement project aimed at modernizing the country’s agricultural sector. The initiative, carried out in collaboration with NEC Africa (Pty) Ltd, seeks to enhance productivity and ensure fair distribution of key agricultural inputs such as seeds and fertilizers, while promoting stable harvests through the integration of advanced digital technologies.
Agriculture plays a critical role in Côte d’Ivoire’s economy, contributing around 30% of its GDP and employing nearly half of its population. However, recent years have seen the sector struggle due to global price increases for essential materials, driven by conflicts, natural disasters, and pandemics. To address these challenges, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the African Development Bank have extended co-financed loan support to the Ivorian government under an “emergency food security” program. Using these funds, the Ministry of Agriculture has partnered with NEC to implement a digital solution that improves efficiency and transparency in agricultural operations.
Under the agreement, NEC will deploy two key technologies: the “e-Voucher” system and its agricultural ICT platform “CropScope.” The e-Voucher system uses ID cards and smartphones to track and manage the distribution of agricultural materials, preventing misuse through biometric authentication and ensuring fair access for registered farmers. Meanwhile, CropScope will build a digital database covering approximately 30,000 hectares of farmland, enabling the monitoring of crop growth and field conditions. The system will also provide data-driven farming recommendations, including optimal fertilization and harvest timings, helping to stabilize yields and boost productivity.
By leveraging these technologies, NEC aims to support sustainable agricultural practices and strengthen food security in Côte d’Ivoire. The initiative will help government agencies and farmers streamline input distribution, improve resource management, and create a more resilient agricultural supply chain.
Moving forward, NEC plans to expand its digital agriculture solutions to other developing countries, using technology and public-private collaboration to promote sustainable farming, equitable access to agricultural inputs, and long-term food stability.
